Glossary of common terms used throughout the site.

bifoliote - (Relating to leaves) Has 2 leafets at end of stem. (Geminate and Jugate also mean the same)

bigeminate - (Relating to leaves) 2 bifoliolate leaves at end of stem

compound - (Relating to leaves) Contains leafets radiating from central point

imparipinnate (or odd-pinnate) - (Relating to leaves) Pinnate leaf with odd number of leafets (i.e. a leafet at the end of the stem)

paripinate (or even-pinnate) - (Relating to leaves) Pinnate leaf with even number of leafets

pinnate - (Relating to leaves) Containing rows of leaves on either side of central stem. Opposite each other. (The word pinate has origins of words meaning feather)

pinnate - (Relating to leafet) Has a central midrib with veins radiating outwards to edge of leaf. (The word pinate has origins of words meaning feather)

palmate - (Relating to leaves) Leaves containing several lobes. (Usually more than 5 and so resemble the palm of a hand)

lanceolate - (Relating to leaves) Long thin leaves that widen in the middle. Shaped like a lance
