The genus Plantago contains around 200 species. Plantain has a long history of being used a herbal medacine and is believed to have antiseptic properties and used against bites and stings.

Size - Small - up to 25cm
Leaves - Sessile (having no stem and borne directly from the stem) but narrow close to the stem. Veined - anything from 1 - 9 veins.
Stem - Stem to flower head long and rigid
Reproductive Parts - A light brown/pale yellow. Anthers turn purple when young.
Distribution - Very widespread in a variety of habitats, prefering wet areas.

  • Leaves - Can be eaten raw or cook, often used for tea.
